Halterworth Training School Partnership

What will I study?

To ensure you become a confident and successful teacher in the 21st century, our programme is vibrant, research‑informed and continually reviewed. You will be immersed in both the theory and practice of teaching, gaining the most up‑to‑date understanding of how children learn and how great teaching happens. Training days hosted across different Partnership Schools also give you the chance to take part in focused learning walks and tours, helping you see effective practice in a range of real classroom environments.

The course prepares you to teach across the 5–11 age range and is structured around a series of modules. These include taught modules delivered by the University of Winchester and HTSP. Throughout the year, you will study all elements of primary education—deepening your understanding of learning and teaching, exploring the breadth of the curriculum and developing the professional skills associated with high‑quality classroom practice.

Your Fridays are dedicated training days and are shared between the University of Winchester and HTSP.

  • At the University of Winchester, you will develop strong subject knowledge in English, mathematics and science, alongside receiving structured support for your academic assignments.

  • With HTSP, you will take part in practical, school‑focused sessions covering foundation subjects, behaviour management and key teaching pedagogies such as modelling, scaffolding and adaptive teaching.

This shared approach gives you the best of both worlds: access to cutting‑edge educational research from the University and insight from practising experts who work daily in primary classrooms/schools. HTSP trainers regularly take you into classrooms to see research‑informed practice in action. When this isn’t possible, they bring along real examples—children’s books, teacher planning, assessment materials and current classroom resources—so you can clearly connect theory with the realities of day‑to‑day teaching.

Over the year, you will complete three assignments that are closely linked to your school placements, allowing you to combine academic study with practical experience. You will receive plenty of support with your writing, ensuring you feel confident and well‑prepared.
